Dating techniques are procedures used by scientists to determine the age of rocks, fossils, or artifacts. Relative dating methods tell only if one sample is older or younger than another; absolute dating methods provide an approximate date in years. The latter have generally been available only since Many absolute dating techniques take advantage of radioactive decay , whereby a radioactive form of an element decays into a non-radioactive product at a regular rate. Others, such as amino acid racimization and cation-ratio dating, are based on chemical changes in the organic or inorganic composition of a sample.

Paleogenomic and bioanthropological studies of ancient massacres have highlighted sites where the victims were male and plausibly died all in battle, or were executed members of the same family as might be expected from a killing intentionally directed at subsets of a community, or where the massacred individuals were plausibly members of a migrant community in conflict with previously established groups, or where there was evidence that the killing was part of a religious ritual. We highlight three results: i the majority of individuals were unrelated and instead were a sample of what was clearly a large farming population, ii the ancestry of the individuals was homogenous which makes it unlikely that the massacre was linked to the arrival of new genetic ancestry, and iii there were approximately equal numbers of males and females. Combined with the bioanthropological evidence that the victims were of a wide range of ages, these results show that large-scale indiscriminate killing is a horror that is not just a feature of the modern and historic periods, but was also a significant process in pre-state societies. Using Carbon 14 to analyse human skeletal remains
It is unclear when the line of Neanderthals split from that of modern humans; studies have produced various intervals ranging from , to more than , years ago. The oldest potential Neanderthal bones date to , years ago, but the classification remains uncertain. After much debate over their validity , researchers depicted Neanderthals as primitive, stupid, and brutish for much of the earlyth century. Although knowledge and perception of them has markedly changed since then in the scientific community, the image of the unevolved caveman archetype remains prevalent in popular culture.
The R-M project is open to all individuals who have a derived i. Still, because of the complex branching structure within R-M, all individuals will be encouraged to undertake additional testing to refine the branch of M to which they belong. If you have at least two of those three values and differ by only one at the mismatching marker, you may though not certainly a member of the R-M Haplogroup.
